The Central Exhibition of the 4^th edition of Art Safari Bucharest is taking place at Kretzulescu Galleries (Calea Victoriei 45, next to the National Art Museum of Romania). The Central Exhibition entitled Notes on a Landscape is curated by Wim Waelput (1978, Ghent, BE)

Taking a transhistorical perspective on the artistic landscape in Romania, the exhibition Notes on a Landscape encompasses works from the beginning of the modern tradition to contemporary artistic positions. Organized around five chapters, it will explore ‘topical’ issues on identity, politics and representation. There will be a focus on the variable role of the artist in society, in relation to these social and political contexts. The first chapter, Fluid Identity, explores the notion of identity and its manifestation and construction as a national or cultural concept. Chapter two The Artist as Witness and chapter three The Hybrid Artist both address the impact of changing social and political environments on artistic production, focusing on artists as observers of their time and as versatile inhabitants of their surroundings. Chapter four My Beloved Bucharest investigates practices that deal with the (controlled) public space or recognise the liberating potential of the private. Finally, Decolonising the Self unearths the emergence of a new art scene in search of a new cultural identity during and beyond the time of transition. By emphasising narratives and perspectives that are often overlooked, this exhibition suggests an alternative reading of the conventional understanding of art history.

Wim Waelput (°1979) is the founding director and curator of KIOSK, a venue for contemporary art in Ghent, affiliated with the School of Arts. At KIOSK he curated shows with, among others, Leonor Antunes, Katinka Bock, Runa Islam, Vincent Meessen, Ulla von Brandenburg, Slavs and Tatars, Thea Djordjadze and Edith Dekyndt.
He is member of the acquisition committee of the collection of the Flemish Community and the Flemish Parliament and he has been member of several juries and advisory boards.
